Kyle thought about driving by Alex’s house to make sure he’d gotten home okay, then decided against it. If Alex really was on a date, that could get awkward. He shot him a text but wasn’t surprised to get no answer. The man had either passed out, or was otherwise occupied.

He hadn’t planned on going to Levi’s football game Saturday but changed his mind because he wanted to see Alex. He Googled the game and found it started at eleven, so he arrived at the field just a few minutes before. He really didn’t want to help coach, he was more interested in talking to Alex.

The dads were on the sidelines, but there was no sign of Alex. Levi’s grandparents were on the bleachers with the baby, and sitting next to them was a black couple he didn’t recognize. He approached and smiled at Kim Nelson, whose eyes lit up when she spotted him.

“Kyle, hi! Come join us. Alex isn’t here yet, unless, is he with you?”

Her husband poked her in the side.

Kyle paused next to the bleachers and smiled. “Hey. No, he’s not with me. How are you folks doin’? Hey, Lilah.” He fingered a strand of the child’s hair.

“We’re fine. Oh, do you know Pippa, Alex’s paralegal?” She motioned to the pretty woman next to her.

He extended a hand and smiled. “We haven’t had the pleasure. Kyle Harbor.”

She shook his hand and nodded affably. “Of Harbor-White Construction, sure! Happy to meet you. This is my cousin, Lennie Wilds.”

The big man with long dreadlocks offered his hand and a wide grin. “Not that wild, but I could be with the right man.”

Kyle chuckled. “Okay, well, good luck with that.” He was mercifully rescued by Alex’s secretary approaching with a man and child in tow.

“Mama!” The girl charged past Kyle and catapulted herself onto Pippa’s lap.

He stepped back and the secretary took his arm.

“Sorry about that, Mr. Harbor. She spent the night with her grandpa and me, but she’s definitely a mama’s girl.”

“’s ah’ite.” His mind raced trying to remember the secretary’s name.

“Hello, Denise,” Kim Nelson said cheerfully. “So nice of you all to come.”

“We were looking forward to it. Roger loves football and misses it now that he’s retired. Oh! Mr. Harbor, this is my husband Roger. Roger, this is a client of Alex’s, Mr. Harbor.”

Kyle offered his hand again, and shook with the big man. “Kyle, please. You too, Denise. No need for formalities.” ’ Specially now that I heard your name.

Pippa added, “Kyle, do you like football? Daddy coached at U of I for many years then scouted for the Bears.”

Impressed, he raised his eyebrows. “No foolin’? That’s very cool.” He glanced out over the small field in front of them. “I’m afraid what we’ve got goin’ on here is a far cry from actual football.”

Roger scanned the field. “No kidding. What’s going on out there? Those boys have a huge hole in their backfield. I wonder if they realize that?”

Kyle smiled. “I’m sure they don’t.
